The essence of black and white film photography is in the processes involved. The process of visualizing, the process of film developing and the process of printing. The gratification is never instantaneous. It results from the physics of light, the chemical reactions on compounds of silver and the metronomic pace of the developers. The resulting smells and sounds of darkroom containment provide the environment, along with periods of time, waiting and waiting, that challenge the senses and sensibility of the motivated and patient technician.

In my fifty years of amateur joyfulness in pursuing this satisfying and, more than occasionally, frustrating hobby, the process and the product have never failed to lessen my enthusiasm for an art form that never tires in its aesthetic rewards.

My main tool is medium format using a variety of lenses, filters and a mix of films that I hope will continue to be manufactured for all who share this interest.

I do my own developing in my own darkroom on gelatin silver paper with archival toning.

I enjoy the processes and the results. Hopefully others will also and be inspired to be involved in the act of creating a work that defines the soul of an image.
